UNDER A TIARA OF SMOKE RINGS

2014

The Frenchman

A bar tender

Poured the Englishman

His drink

Knew right away

Saw it in his eyes

Always a giveaway

Discreetly

He says nothing

Keeps it to himself

A reliance on ‘tips’

Ensures tact

Under a tiara of smoke rings

The racy girl

Perched delightfully

Upon the bar stool

Nonchalant

Available

Pained expression

Sipping cognac

Her only concern

Affordability

She was all too well aware

Of a patron at large

Against a back drop of floodlit

Half naked dancing girls

Largely ignored

Largely appreciated

Such is the way of things

In Paris

The English orders her

Another drink

Not caring if she wants it

A mere gesture

The Frenchman hands it her

Glances down the bar

An affirmative nod

Says all that needs to be said

Surreptitious eye contact

A subliminal yet

Prudent exchange as

She idly sizes up

His watch brand

Saville Row attire also

It meets her approval

Estimates his worth

A bargain is struck

Without a word passing

Between one another

An English gentleman

Never haggles

Une dame de la nuit

Elle connaît bien sa valeur

  1. Your ability to paint a picture not only of a place but of a specific time is breath-taking. I’m transported through space and time every time I read one of your poetic gems. You create a moving picture of the past filmed with words of sepia tone. Truly, sir, you have an amazing gift.
